Got 2 packs of Lay's for the Price of 1

>> Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Three weeks ago, we bought Lay's Barbecue at our favorite grocery and we got two but paid only for one. We didn't know that there was a sale going on, so ultimately, we saved a lot. Though we didn't finish the huge pack at one time, we managed to finish the two packs in two weeks. We are not really big on junk food, but when we watch a movie or do something fun, we gobble a few. Thus it always pays to have some at home. Now, if I buy gold bars, and they come in the same way, 2 for the price of 1, I am sure I'd be millionaire in no time as I will be buying lots of them, lol..

Dessert All You Can!

>> Thursday, November 24, 2011

My daughter and I always go for cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, bars, and everything else that's sinfully addicting. But it bears a much heavier load on me because daughter seems to like the idea of seeing cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, bars, and everything dandy, but would only taste some and leave everything for me to finish-- hahaha.. Of course, if she likes something, she will finish her share. I have seen her eyes twinkle with a really colorful and yummy treat. To a six year old, anything colorful is indeed good looking. But once the taste is bad, it's a goner.

Anyway, I showed Lili the ticket for the Dessert All You Can, an event on December 3, 2011 where the abundance of cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, bars, coffee, tea, juice shall grace thy presence. And she asked if her favorite desserts shall be served. Since it's Dessert All You Can, anything is possible, that's what I told her. Oh, and I showed her the cakes that Monster Kitchen’s Fundamentals in Baking and Pastry Arts Batch03 have made. They are after all the people who shall prepare the desserts for this event. It shall be held at  Thai Me Up Restaurant on Capistrano-Mabini Sts. If you guys are also looking into desserts, be there from 2:30-7:00pm, and buy your tickets before you plunge in, it's just P 250 for the indulgence of a lifetime..

Oh and, do not be conscious of the security cameras, your every bite won't be recorded thereat, lol..

Baked Porky Popps

My sister introduced a new junkfood-- hahaha.. It's actually the chicharon for junkfood eaters. Not that Chicharon itself is a good food to be precise, but just imagine, pork fat being squeezed from the fat itself-- grease or not, it's still fat and well, too much is unhealthy. But for food lovers like me, chicharon is okay, for as long as you get the kind from SLERS, or those from Monterey Tomas Saco (not a paid post okay, lol..), and NOT too much in just one sitting. Betteryet, share it! Company always delights in food--- agree?

Anyway, Baked Porky Popps is actually good for my tastebuds. I specially like the one in red packet. And it's also affordable. You can buy it from groceries everywhere. When we bought all four packets, I thought that the Retail POS System at the grocery was broken that it showed a very small amount, but then we realized it was really that affordable.

A Kilo of Chicken Thigh....

A Kilo of Chicken Thigh. That's what I bought yesterday while shopping at SaveMore. For some reason, it was guided by the urge to earn 20 points for my SM Advantage card. Ha! Now, I am rather confused as I cannot think of many chicken recipes for Chicken Thigh. Last night however, when we arrived home, my instinct told me that I should boil them, and later baked a few pieces with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and some garlic.

I have not even taken a photo of them yet. Anyway, I still have a few pieces soaked in chicken broth, and perhaps I will do some more this week. In the mean time, I better think of the next recipe so food here in the house won't be a bore. Perhaps I should use the chicken thigh in my next pasta recipe, or cook them with lots of tomatoes. Seriously, as much as I wanna make everything exciting, I just lack time to do all the work..

Trim Down With Mangoes

>> Thursday, November 17, 2011

I love fruits. And I love Mangoes most of all. I can name so many Mango recipes and mango products, and never tire eating them, even on a daily basis. That's the reason why my friend Julie told me to try african mango. It's actually a slslimmingroduct that is from the fruit of the Irvingia tree. Or what is known as wild mangoes or African Mangoes.

Unlike our usual mangoes, African Mangoes are said to burn fat, suppress appetite, and best of all, control the obesity hormone Leptin...it also decreases the bad cholesterol levels and regulates digestion. People in Africa eat it raw and get its full advantage. Whew! Then we better get hold of a seedling and start planting them here, lol.. Of course, we can always order the supplement online..

Manang's Foods..

>> Tuesday, November 15, 2011

For a month or so, we have been buying food from everywhere we find yummy homemade viands for lunch. We have so many sellers here in our area so it saves me energy and time. But we are always in caution for we do not exactly know if they are clean when they prepared said foods. So we make sure that we buy only from those who we see are clean in their food preparation, as well as their surroundings. I would not want to see for an actos attorney should anyone of us contract bladder cancer due to the use of actos..

Our constant provider is the manang and her family whose home cooked meals serves so many patrons, yet they are still able to maintain cleanliness in their area..

Plus, they are not much of a commercial venture as they serve only lunch..

Jollibee Hash Brown Burger

My daughter and I went for a stroll at Divisoria one time and she wanted us to eat at Jollibee afterwards, instead of our usual McDonalds trips. So we went and she told me that she wanted to try the Jollibee Hash Brown Burger.

It's pretty much the same as a regular burger, with cheese. The difference is that, instead of the bun or bread, with the Jollibee Hash Brown Burger you get two hash browns hugging your burger.. Perhaps the plus deal here is that, the hash browns were baked and not fried..  Lili says it's just okay, so I presume it's not quite a hit with my daughter, otherwise, she'd ask me or tell me that we buy it again when we go to Jollibee the next time..

What Manny Pacquiao Eats Before Pacquiao vs Marquez 3

>> Sunday, November 13, 2011

Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 is just a few hours from now.. It's 4:45 in the morning and I can not help but wonder what Manny Pacquiao will eat before his fight with Marquez. I have seen on television about Dianne's reports that Pacquiao likes Filipino dishes prior to his fight.

According to other readings, Manny Pacquiao eats 7000 calories a day during training. Some even say, he eats Camote, or Sweet Potatoes that's packed with carb, and others say he eats mostly protein rich foods. But what is really true? Do you know?

By the way, here's a link for Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 Live Streaming...

Ludy's Coco Jam Regular and Special: A Comparison

>> Friday, November 11, 2011

Ever since I was able to try the Kaya Toast in Singapore, my taste buds have been wary and wanted to try them again. I know that the Kaya Sandwich Toast and Brewed Coffee at Wang's in Changi Airport have left their mark in me and  I would often think of how to recreate the said food tandem locally. Of course, there's  my way of making Kaya Toast, which I mentioned previously on this blog. And Like what I mentioned before, making Kay a Toast entails two things only. The Kaya Spread and the Butter!

Fact: Do you know that the Kaya Spread is synonymous to your Coconut Jam with more eggs and coconut milk of course, plus the hint of pandan. If you do not believe so, here's a link to SUSAN FENIGER'S Kaya Recipe. Complete with plate assembly plus the making of your very own spread.. OMG! I am drooling here, hehehe..

So here's an experiment. I simply wanted to know the difference between the two Ludy's Coco Spreads: The Ludy's Special Coco Jam and the Ludy's Regular Coco Jam.. It is actually Ludy's Coco Spread that I used for my Kaya Toast.. I think it's better than nothing or worst if I have to slave myself in the kitchen just to make home made Kaya Spread for just a short craving--- Oh, but that's a different story.

My experiment allowed me to try the two spreads and see which is better in taste.

I tried using the Regular Ludy's Coco Jam at first and I was convinced that with a great butter, I had actually made a good Kaya Toast. But lo and behold.. The Ludy's Special Coco Jam made me change my mind.

How? Well, the Regular Ludy's Coco Jam  is not quite rich unlike the Ludy's Special Coco Jam. Perhaps more eggs and more coconut milk were used in the process.. The texture is also different in that, the Ludy's Regular Coco Jam is not as smooth and silky looking than the Ludy's Special Coco Jam. And perhaps the Ludy's Regular Coco Jam has less coconut milk than the Ludy's Special Coco Jam that it lasts longer than the latter based on their expiry dates.

Hmm. That's about it for now.. I will add more if I will be able to observe some other importnat details.. In the meantime, aside from Kaya, I am thinking up ways on how to make both disappear.. hahaha.. Thinking of other food ideas to use them on..

Gardenia Love.. Gardenia Bread Heaven..

It had been so long for Gardenia to invade the city of golden friendship. I remember before, we would wonder how "great" this line of bread is that the television ads seem to exaggerate. It was not until I lived in Manila for a period of time that I have come to know how good Gardenia breads are. My favorite then was the classic american bread. My Tita Gin would prepare Ham and Egg sandwiches for me and my Tito Ben with Gardenia. Some mornings, she would have SPAM and eggs sandwiches too. And boy, I was in Gardenia bread heaven! Hahaha..

When I came home, I missed it real bad. But since we have our own bread shops here, well, I have somehow forgotten about Gardenia cravings. And finally, when Gardenia landed, my love affair with Gardenia started again. And aside from the classic american bread, the Chocolate bread became a favorite. But wait until the Gardenia Chocolate Loaf and the Gardenia Butterscotch bread came marching--- I totally love them both!

Whenever I find that Gardenia Chocolate Loaf and the Gardenia Butterscotch Bread is available, I automatically buy some. They are incredibly delicious. You can taste the flavor of chocolate and butterscotch in them.. And as always, you get to enjoy soft bread, plus the flavor in each. Real chocolate chips that melt with the bread in your mouth--

And like all Gardenia breads, I simply adore the lock that locks in freshness, which also serves as the price tag as well as the expiration indicator. Yes, Gardenia half  loaves are quite pricey compared to local bread brands, but hey, the price is all worth it..

I simply love Gardenia breads. How about you? On a side note, I know of someone who placed diamond earrings for women in between two slices of Gardenia Classic, and when the girlfriend found them, she blushed and thought that it was the best proposal ever. Engagement gifts like that are truly awesome, even the bread where the gift was placed, lol..

Knowing When Enough is Enough

>> Monday, November 7, 2011

People have different opinions about what drinks go best with what dish. A good beer or wine can pair with all kinds of food in a really swell way, and a nice cocktail is a lovely way to prepare for a good meal. Still, one dining adventure you want to avoid is a meeting with a policeman and his trusty breathalyzer or, much worse, a deadly car accident that would be, morally and legally, your fault. Drinking and driving really do not pair at all. The best way to handle the issue is to go the "designated driver" route and have someone in your party strictly assigned to do the driving and be an alcohol-eschewing teetotaler for the duration. Still, the reality is that, very often, the designated driver route is simply not in the cards. The trick is to time things out very carefully so that, by the time we're hitting the road, whatever alcohol we've consumed has mostly left our system and won't register badly on a breathalyzer. This should involve giving ourselves plenty of time, limiting our intake (two or three drinks -- not "doubles" but the equivalent of a glass of wine or beer or a 1.5-2 ounce shot of liquor) especially after dinner, and then giving ourselves plenty of time to metabolize all the alcohol we've drunk. (It also helps if we've eaten a good amount of food with our beverages.). If you're still not sure -- and it's often kind of hard to judge -- one way to get some piece of mind is to buy one the brands of breathalyzer that are being offered to consumers and keep it in your car. Using them can be fun and it is the only drinking game we know that actually prevent a tragedy.

Home made Siopao

>> Sunday, November 6, 2011

Before we went home, we were fortunate to witness and participate in making Siopao in my aunt's house.
Quite a huge one, but there are actually just two of them out of the twenty we made. The last two buns had to share the extra filling to place in it, lol.. Anyway, making Siopao actually starts with making the dough.. But before we go there, below are the ingredients used..
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 lb minced pork
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cooking oil
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 6 hard-boiled eggs
  • 2 green onions
  • 4 teaspoons light soy sauce
  • 4 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 4 teaspoons oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch, dissolved in 2 t. water
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 6 teaspoons baking powder
  • Siopao Dough: Mix flour, salt and baking powder in a medium bowl, set aside.

You are to dissolve 1 package active dry yeast in lukewarm water then add 1 cup of the flour mixture. Mix thoroughly. Cover with a cloth and let rise 1 hour.

Dissolve the white sugar in the boiling water. Stir well then let cool to lukewarm. Pour into the yeast mixture, then add the rest of the prepared flour mixture.
Stir to blend well. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 3 minutes-you want your dough smooth, not sticky.
Let rise 2 hours or until doubled.
Divide the dough in two equal parts and start cutting according to desired size of buns..

    Then prepare the filling:

The minced meat was flavored according to the recipe of making meatballs.
    The eggs were then sliced...

To make the Siopao, all you have to do is place the filling into the bun by flattening the dough and putting the egg slice first..
The meatball follows on top the egg slice...
And the bun is then closed by having all edges meet on top. Oh and don't forget to cut out paper for its base while cooking in the steamer or oven..

    Our finished product..

    2 Kilos Plus 1: Butuan City's Lechon

    >> Saturday, November 5, 2011

Sorry for this late post. I was quite busy offline. But as I mentioned in my previous post, Butuan City Lechon  post is here..

After visiting our departed loved ones from the cemetery, we went home and rested awhile. Then we headed to my Aunt Vangie's place for lunch. As expected, we had Lechon -- Butuan City style and flavor..

Tender meat, juicy to the core. The flavor is truly to die for. Yes, I had Iligan City's Lechon on Saturday, then on Tuesday, Butuan City's Lechon.. But what the heck... it's near Christmas, Lechon will be everywhere-- hahaha..

We had 2 kilos served during lunch, then when we were done, another kilo arrived. All from different Lechon dealers in Butuan City. And sure enough, they tasted different from each other. But quite frankly, I could never say that one is better than the other. Although, Ramos' Lechon in Butuan City has always been a hit, I'd say that both are delicious..

Fruits: The Healthy Alternative for Sweet Desserts

    >> Tuesday, November 1, 2011

After a full and heavy meal, most people would result in looking for a sweet dessert in order to wash the flavors in one’s palette. While these treats are sure to be delicious, it might not be healthy. A meal might not be complete without your favorite dessert but if medical or health conditions prevent you from getting that slice of cake or scoop of ice cream, it is time to consider a healthier alternative: fruits. Rich in nutrients and high in fiber, there are a number of benefits that can be derived in having a serving of fruits everyday.

Is there a right and wrong way when it comes to eating fruits? The good thing about this healthy alternative is that is very versatile, you can just eat it by itself or have it mixed with yogurt or milk. There are many ways on how you can enjoy its flavor and taste and for some a fruit salad is the best way to have a complete serving, all in one bowl. While there are no set of rules, it is better not to mix the citrus one from those that are sweet or pulpy. Also avoid a mixture that can upset your stomach quickly.

Individuals suffering from digestive problems could find relieve by eating fruits that are high in fiber. Studies also suggest that fruits are good for those who are in a diet. Eating one before a meal could help curb the appetite which means you will eat less during mealtime. Keep in mind that certain types of fruits already have natural sugar content and some of them might be harmful for those with diabetes.

Just Dinner and Some Food Thoughts and Wishes

So happy with my dinner today. We arrived late here in Butuan City and it was actually raining too. But what greeted us for dinner was heavenly.

My aunt prepared for us a treat. My all time favorite, Prawns. OMG! I simply finished four and I was speechless.. hahaha..

Of course, before we had dinner, we were served Tatay Laloy's pansit. It has pork, chicken, spicy sausage, fish and everything else in it. So yummy! Tomorrow, we will be visiting my grandparents' tomb as well as my Uncle Ric's. After which, we shall partake of  Butuan City's Lechon for lunch--- can't wait! But what I really, really miss is my grandpa's duck recipe. I hope to be able to try it one more time. I just know my Tita Carrie can cook it the same way my grandpa did when he was alive..
