FROM MY KITCHEN: Kinilaw

>> Monday, August 29, 2011

We have just celebrated the city fiesta and I am sure this dish is one of the many food fares that people have enjoyed. It's plain Kinilaw, but there are lots of variety. Take for example the Sinuglaw we had at Trellis n' Vines, or the Kinilaw from Yellow Fin Seafood Restaurant. But apart from that, Kinilaw is not only limited to fish. Remember the Kinilaw na Balat we ate in Kauswagan, Lanao? That's no fish, but Sea Cucumber..

Anyway, to make Kinilaw is easy.. All you have to do is prepare the freshest ingredients. Choose the type of fish, or whatever it is you want to make as Kinilaw.  The spices and flavorings used come differently by region, that's what I have observed. There are parts of the country which do not use the Tabon-tabon and Biasong as prime ingredients. There are also parts of the country which uses Calamansi or Lemonsito only, along with native cane vinegar.

My Kinilaw recipe uses tabon-tabon, biasong, lots of ginger and onions. I used white vinegar because we do not have native vinegar here right now, or the orange colored vinegar with strong flavors. But if we had the native vinegar, it would have been better.

Fiesta Mood

>> Thursday, August 25, 2011

So everyone has been in a festive mood since last week. Lot of activities and events happened already and well, on Sunday is the big day for Cagayan de Oro City as it is after all, the city fiesta.. I am sure everyone will have a grand time watching the fluvial parade as well as the races and the street dancing competition. There's also the parade of vintage cars.. And lots of food.. hehehe

A guy who bought tsw custom wheels said that he will go to the streets and flaunt his new ware, lol.. As for me and my household, we'll have to watch and see-- rather, wait and see, hehehe.. I am not sure if we will go to someone's place or not. But if you ask me, I would rather stay at home and rest.. I am also in a festive mood, but I do not find it practical these days..

Hmm.. What Do You Think?

>> Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Yesterday we attended a media gathering invitation from Geiser Maclang and the Philippine Franchise Association. And I was reminded of the fact that years ago, after graduating from college, Convention Services/Events Staff Jobs were the ones I really wanted to do. Why? I like organizing and meeting with people. Two, I love to talk and talk and talk and make good use of my artistic skills and talents.. But then, at the turn of life's events, I found something better and richer that my talents can be put to good use anytime I want..  No organizing stuff for me now, but I do organize treats for my Lili and sister from time to time, as long as the budget is fine. But lately, it's kinda tight so now, I think it's really a halt!
In the mean time, we do enjoy small treats at home that we create.. That is after all another venue to showcase talent, lol..

Prevention is always better than cure

>> Wednesday, August 17, 2011

An Actos lawsuit is far from what I am expecting right now. Mainly because I don't use any drug or diabetes medication. Actos, if you are not familiar with the name, is an oral diabetes medicine. It has been found and such findings has been shown by recent studies, to lead to serious injuries and complications like heart attacks, heart failure, and an increased risk of bladder cancer. All these can be reasons for an Actos Lawsuit. Pioglitazone, the chemical name for Actos, had been sold under the trade names Actos, ActoplusMet, Competact and Duetact. And unknown to many, the chemical components of such drug can cause the ill effects mentioned above..

Lesson learned: Always check before buying any drug or medication. Prevention is always better than cure..

Missed Bangus at the Corner Mini Market---

We missed the Milkfish from the corner mini market. Instead of buying some, we bought a different kind of fish, which is not that good.. But then, since we need to have fish included in our diet, we bought some anyway.. I forgot the name of what we bought today..

Sweet Mangoes and Fried Sweet Potatoes

This week's entry is this simple and healthy snack.. Sweet Mangoes and Fried Sweet Potatoes that had been served as afternoon snacks for both Lili and River the other day..

Sweet Mangoes were bought from the Fruit stand a few meters away from where we live. Sliced and served as shown in photo. But the sweet potatoes were sliced thin and long, deep friend and sprinkled with a little sugar before being taken from the pan..

The combination was quite sensational.. even my nephews, Gian and Kurt loved them..

Happy---

>> Friday, August 12, 2011

I am so happy for my sister as she is now actively blogging. She has already collected photos for posts and even had her memory cards opened for past photographs that she can use in her blog. Well, what makes me even happier is that, all the domains I have given her are with page rank now. Not just a PR of 1 or 2, but PR 3 and PR 4 respectively.. I am hoping that she will soon get more direct sponsors and advertisers to help her go through the financial tide while waiting for her NLE results. Well, I am sure everything will work well as she is now busily enjoying blogging, at the same time doing what she loves-- cooking, taking photos and blogging about them..

Anyway, we are planning to make Mango Float today as our dad has given us lots of Mangoes since yesterday.

 yesterday, there were five---
Today, he gave us seven---

Although we have eaten a few, still there are many Mangoes here at our new place.. So, Mango Float it will be, or maybe not.. we'll see..

French Toast for Breakfast

>> Tuesday, August 9, 2011

For this week's entry for FROM MY KITCHEN meme, here's some French Toast for breakfast.

How to do it? All you will need are:

1.) 1 egg, whisked and seasoned.
2.) 5 Medium Slices of bread
3.) oil (vegetable oil or canola or even extra virgin olive oil)

Procedure:

Dip the bread unto the whisked egg, on both sides, and set aside. Heat oil in a carajay, then fry each slice of bread, on both sides until golden brown.. Serve with bacon and ham with tomatoes--- yum!

Retractable banner stands will be needed for standee tarpaulins should I think of this idea for a food business. Should I do it?

Anyway, what have you from your kitchen?

6 Interesting Facts About the History of Humanities

>> Monday, August 8, 2011

Humanities is a discipline that many are interested in and few really understand. Since there is always more to learn in this field it’s well worth taking a look at the history of it overall.

1. The study of humanities can be traced back to ancient Greece for how citizens there were educated. This was the overall way that people in this time were educated and there was no other way. People didn’t have a choice in their education as it was dictated and that’s where the whole notion of humanities started. It was adopted by the state and helped to form the basis of an education to ensure citizens lived with a certain behavior.

2. It was in Ancient Rome that the seven liberal arts associated with humanities were developed and founded. These seven liberal arts still exist today in some form and have created degree programs that many can use to further their education. This was of course a primitive form and meant to keep the people in line from an ethical point of view, but it formed the basis of what humanities was to be adapted as.

3. Renaissance times saw the change for humanities to be studied as another subject rather than the overall education. It was during this era and time period that humanities started to change shape. Rather than being the only type or form of education, it quickly became a subject that people could choose to study. This was a real change in the way of thinking about this discipline and shaped the way that we thought of humanities moving forward.

4. It was in the twentieth century that humanities developed into the discipline and academic subject that it is today. The way that we study humanities today took some time to develop and finally took shape at this point in time. This is now how we look to the discipline though some changes have certainly been made. It is a discipline through and through and for some it is still looked to as a way of life.

5. Humanities has become a subject that all students must study in some form within the United States as part of a liberal arts education. If you are going for any type of degree in liberal arts which many are in college, then you will likely have one or more classes in humanities. This is good as it gives an overall view and appreciation for something with such historic roots.

6. Since the nineteenth century it was believed that humanities was essential to develop personal consciousness and a sense of civic duty. This was the whole reason that humanities came about as a sort of ethical measure. Though it is only part of a culture today it is still an important one that fascinates many.

Humanities as a whole can be somewhat difficult to understand at times. This is a discipline that will likely constantly evolve and change but some roots may remain the same.

MJM Fred enjoys providing students with information about course requirements for earning a master of fine arts.

Conferencing...

Web conferencing is one of the many tasks of a contact center agent. Calling clients, connecting them to another department, taking sup calls, and many other ways by which Conference calls are done. It takes ample training to do it right as the gadgets used may take some time to get used to. It also entails ample knowledge about the gadgets and software used. Come to think of it, the gadgets used are not your ordinary gadgets, but once you are able to use them with ease, every other gadget that comes to your hand is almost too easy to manage.

Well, I think any gadget is easy for as long as one is interested to learn how to use them. The techno-phobic will always be disinterested to learn more about changes in technology, specifically that which pertains to upgrades in technological devices. But once one is interested, everything will go smoothly. It is so difficult to teach someone who is not interested, and one who has already given up learning new things even before learning sessions have started. Like, I know someone who told me that she would rather bake or cook in the kitchen than to go online and do stuff. But when her interest was sparked by getting new recipes online, she started to get interested anyway..

Crispy Fried Chicken and Deep Fried Pork

Friday last week, we had Crispy Fried Chicken and Deep Fried Pork. We went to the groceries to buy some stuff, and we decided right then and there that Crispy Fried Chicken and Deep Fried Pork is the perfect dinner main dish. Cooking it is easy. We just had to clean the chicken thigh and pork cut in rectangle properly before it was dipped in the batter and smudged with crispy powder mix. No hassle, just plain simple and fun..

Well, it was fun for my six year old who cooked it with my sister..

Pork Nilaga with Potatoes and Malunggay

>> Sunday, August 7, 2011

Have you eaten Pork Nilaga with Potatoes and Malunggay?Well, we had this treat last week. When we bought the ingredients, we were actually buying from the market and I was so shocked that Malunggay was quite expensive, lol.. I was so used to having Malunggay right at the backyard, and we didn't have to buy them from the market.
But to resolve that, we have actually started planting a mini garden again. Right in front of our new place is a mini garden with a Durian Tree and a Star Apple Tree. They are yet young now, but they provide the best shade. So too, there are already ginger, sili, and some others I have no idea of, plus the Alugbati and leeks that we added. Not to mention the lemon grass--- ah, lovely garden.

By the way, while we were at the market place, an RV stopped in the middle of the busy street. I think they were waiting for the rv emergency roadside assistance, which perhaps came later.. When we left, it was still there with its huge body. Whoever owns it must be rich, and crazy to be allowing it to pass through the streets in the market area.. hehehe

For Pork Nilaga with Potatoes and Malunggay recipe, PM me..

Where Respect is Due

>> Thursday, August 4, 2011

Yesterday, I found out that there are some food bloggers who use the images of other food blogger friends who kinda took them and inserted them into their own posts, without the knowledge and permission of the owners. Such a bad practice. I never do that in this blog. If there are photos here that are not mine, I always acknowledge the source. With regards to my photos, well, I am an amateur. My images may not be for booklet printing, but they are shot by me, and uploaded in this food blog for the very purpose of enhancing my own posts. I think that when we use other people's work, they deserve mention, if not linking. That is if we give them respect and honor their work. But of course, it is always a very nice gesture to ask permission first, before using photos that are not ours. Unless they are provided in public sites for public consumption.

On the other hand, I have experienced being cheated upon as the other day, I found out that a blogger with an agriculture niche, has copied my post from another blog (even copied the title "The Wonders of Malunggay" posted at Proven Home Remedies). I was so devastated because this person copied word per word. That shameless person whose style is actually copying or scraping from other sites, copying them per word on his/her blog. And worst, he is a Filipino who hails from the city I so respect and love, the Queen City of the South. Well, I left him a couple of comments and asked him to rephrase the words/paragraphs and everything that he took from my blog. And if he can not do so, he/she would rather take the post down. Must be difficult for the blogger to rephrase, we found the post taken down the day he/she added a new post at his/her site. Now, I wonder if that is original or another copied writing, hmm..

Anyway, for today's entry of  FROM MY KITCHEN, here's SLER's Tocino..

I simply cooked it according to the packet. Fried in EVOO that we got from Robinson's at 50% off, hehehe..
What do you have from your kitchen?

Food for the Salo-salo at School

>> Wednesday, August 3, 2011

River and Lili are going to have Salo-salo as part of their school's Buwan ng Wika. Each of them were assigned to bring a Filipino delicacy, as per assigned by their teacher, that is good for five people. Lili was assigned ti bring Palitao, while River was assigned to bring Sapin-sapin. So this morning, we went to cogon where kakanin is sold. We no longer live where the manang who sells kakanin passes by every morning. However, we are near where kakanin is sold at the market area.

Here are what we found there:

We bought Palitao for Lili's share for the Salo-salo. We also bought some for us at home.
Then the Cassava and Sapin-sapin came next. We bought River's contribution and some for the house too.
The kakanin above is said to be made from Cassava and Banana, but we didn't buy any. It was just new to our sight.. and I do not think it is part of the Kakanin we so distinguish. It's I guess a product of new discoveries.

We Ate Too Much PORK! Argh!

>> Monday, August 1, 2011

The day before we moved in this new place, and the day before that, we ate so much PORK! Well, we usually eat pork on a daily basis, but that's when we add pork to our favorite vegetables. So we wouldn't really call it too much!
The day before, we were served by my cousin (my neighbor now) with Pork Adobo for dinner. The day we moved in (first day we brought all our things) we brought 3 kilos of Pork which we cooked at our cousin's place for lunch and dinner.. We had Pork Stew for lunch and again, Pork Adobo for dinner.
Then of course, on the day we finally slept here for the first time, we had Lechon Paksiw and Kilawin on our first dinner at the new place. That, and the two days, and the days that came afterward, Pork was the easiest to buy, to cook and to store at room temperature.

Having realized that, we have decided to buy fish today, our seventh day here. We shall have fish for lunch and dinner.

Not Just Pills

Have you ever considered to use cleanse weight loss pill and all other weight loss products in the market today? I am sure you are in the look out for the fastest weight loss pills if you are considering to use some. A good weight loss pill however is difficult to come by, unless you have yourself checked properly by a doctor, and meals planned by a dietitian. My father's diet is directed by his doctor, and his diet pills are actually recommended by him to to some adverse effects, if not given ample guidance.

I know there are many who say they do not have the time to eat properly, or go on an exercise, that's is why they resort to diet pills alone. But truth be-told, diet pills alone wouldn't be much effective than that of the combined diet, plus exercise plus diet regimen. For a more effective diet plan, that which includes vegetables and fruits is highly recommended. Green leafy vegetables, especially Malunggay, is the most effective. Fruits rich in Vitamin C is the best.

So don't just use pills if you wish to go on a diet. Keep a balance and you'll see the difference. I am sure you know what I mean.. Eat healthy guys---
