Pizza and Pasta at the Roof Top Hotel and Bar

>> Wednesday, April 27, 2011

This is the third place where we had another pizza experience.. It's one of Camiguin's pride, and true enough, there were lots of foreigners and tourists who came to eat.. And I guess some stayed at their hotel too. Well, we came because I needed a WiFi connection, and they have it..
Anyway, we ordered their pizza, and we didn't really enjoy it as it tasted bland. The crust was nice, but because the toppings and sauce didn't taste nice, it was bad, the entire package.. I guess their crust will go well with Perry's Pizza's Perry Delight toppings and sauce, lol..
They are also affordable, I must say. But it's not at all commendable. That is my opinion okay..
Their spaghetti was quite nice..Lili liked it. But she gave away her chicken, as the fried chicken that went with their spaghetti was just ordinary tasting..  Anyway, if you are missing McDonalds or Jollibee, their Value Meals menu can somehow remind you, but of course, it will NOT be a guarantee that they will taste like McDonalds or Jollibee..

Enough with the food, what really bothered me was that, there were so many flies that flew around and it was darn too hot. Worst, when we arrived, they didn't seem to be interested to wait on us. I guess it's because we didn't have any foreigner as a companion, unlike all others who came.. We had to approach someone at the counter then I was told to wait at our table as he will attend to us. Food was served thirty minutes instead of twenty..

Gums and Gumballs

I am always fascinated with every gumball machine that I get to see.. When I was a child, my curiosity sprang from the thought that gumball can not only be bought at the sari-sari store round the corner, but also in other places where all you have to do is drop a coin or two, and gumballs are there for the taking.. Of course, during my childhood, there were not much gumball machines available. Perhaps in some areas where many grown ups frequent, like the university or the Ororama Cogon, which is prominent at the time.. When one buys gumballs from the grocery, they are bought as bulk candy in packs of 100 gumballs. There were not 50 gumballs a pack, so it is just the sari-sari store that buys them that way..

I remember the red colored gumballs that we used to play as lipstick, coloring our innocent lips with such sweet wonder.. They were bigger and well, cost only five gumballs for ten centavos.. Cheap huh.. Then gradually, the said gumballs has become smaller and more expensive, like a peso each--- but of course, they are so small, you need to buy ten of them to create a good bubble.. And of course, other forms of bublle gums have appeared along the way. There were also others that had been flavored differently, so there arose a multitude of flavors for every gumball.. Not to mention, some have evolved to become more fun than others..

These days, kids would enjoy specific brands like Yaki, which  has a sweet and sour flavor...

Anything Fair Trade

>> Monday, April 25, 2011

My friend is an aspiring chef who is, right now, enrolled in a Culinary School. One time she mentioned about going to this fair trade, where food ingredients as well as produce and cookware are on center stage.. Of course, I would not be able to go as it is billions of miles away from me, but she did mentioned that using using fair trade products in cooking is good. As a matter of fact, the results have positive effect especially when used in one's daily life. She says food is healthier and fresher. Not to mention, ingredients are cheaper. That is why, she says that people should look for the Fair Trade mark on cooking ingredients or in any food.

Today, I read about Premcrest Fair trade wholesale in a blog that I read from time to time. Although the blogger is from the US, I have come to learn good things about Premcrest Fair Trade...  Here in the Philippines, we have a similar thing, but they are more concentrated on local produce, and local farmers sell them in a "Tabo", or a once a week or once a month fair in a barangay.. Yes, the produce are cheaper compared to the groceries, and they are fresher too..  Buying in the "tabo" helps local farmers sustain their livelihood...

Dominggo Lauya: Easter Treat...

Today is Easter Sunday.. As our traditional belief, being a catholic family, we refrain from eating pork when the season of lent starts.. And we only resume eating pork and all other meats during Easter Sunday.. Easter Sunday is dubbed as Araw ng Pagkabuhay, or the day that Christ has risen. So people will proclaim, Hallelujah..
And because we can already eat pork, or beef-- The said Lauya, or soup is then called Dominggo Lauya.. That's lunch today.. followed by dessert... Buko Linabog.. yummy!

Perry's Pizza

>> Sunday, April 24, 2011

This is the second pizza place Lili and I went to. It's NOT exactly that hip place. More like a "tambayan" for foreigners who need a drink with their buddies.. When we arrived two foreigners were drinking, and while we were eating, another two followed. They were so noisy backbiting their wives and in-laws, lol..
Anyway, unlike the experience at Luna, there was a pizza server, but it's knife that one uses to dine.. still, NOT the proper server, if you ask me. Although, that won't matter much, really.
Perry Delight was the house specialty, and the most expensive. But if you ask me, it is still very cheap at P 230 only... It had all the meat toppings on the menu, but I must tell you, though the topping tasted good, the crust doesn't.

Luna Ristorante

>> Saturday, April 23, 2011

We are a pizza devouring tandem, Lili and I.. and like what I wrote on my previous post, we looked forward to trying out Camiguin's Best Pizza...Uhm.. People who have tried it raved about it, so it must be good.. And what better way to enjoy pizza than with our aunt, uncle and cousins...
So we tried the Luna Pizza as well as the Luna Supreme Pizza, priced at P 350 and P 400 respectively..  I was NOT pleased with how the order was served.. With the crust burnt, and each pizza lacked pizza servers so we had a difficulty in serving each slice unto our plates.. As far as decorum is concerned when eating pizza, if it's dine in and you are given plates with forks and knives, then the pizza should come with a pizza server, in which case, we were not given.. even after we asked the attendant..
Two orders of each 12 inch pizza mentioned above.. That's four 12 inch pizzas for a party of ten.. Although it was difficult to serve the pizza, we were able to do it till we were all full.. A hearty pizza dinner at Luna Ristorante..
So, is it really the best pizza in Camiguin? Hmm.. Judging from how we were served, and how the pizza came, it didn't look good burnt.. The pizza was kinda "hard"... We even joked that it felt like chewing on cement.. The taste? Luna Pizza tasted better than the Luna Supreme which is priced higher.. Nothing exciting really..  Their pizza at Luna are said to be cooked in a brick oven, and the attendant said, that is the reason why their crust was burnt..  The place is good though, spacious and they boast of free WiFi.. The attendants are quite slow and are not at all happy to be of service.. Somehow, they lack that genuine charm, or maybe they were just tired..
So far, Luna Ristorante is the first pizza place we have tried here in Camiguin, so I can not compare it with others.. By far, I could not say it is the best.. Maybe we should explore the island further for other pizza places to go to and then we can compare..

Next Stop: Luna's Pizza

>> Saturday, April 16, 2011

I have been hearing about Luna Ristorante's Pizza as the best Pizza in the island. and when we were on the ferry coming here, a guy wearing Timberland boots told me that I should visit the place.. for the Pizza of course.. Well, we have planned to go there last week while Sweet was still here, being that we explore Pizza places together most of the time.. Anyway, I am hoping she'll be back..but then again, if she won't be coming back as she will be busy, Lili and River shall be my really good companions for Pizza tasting.. I wonder why many people think it is best.. And to know that, we have to drop by Luna's..

Being voracious pizza eaters, I am sure Lili and River can help me decide.. hehehe...

Saba and Uyap...

Sorry for the not so clear image, but that is Pork Liempo sauteed in Red Bagoong or what is locally known as prawn paste or "uyap". Uyap has this distinct pink color and salty taste...

Pork Liempo sauteed in Red Bagoong is a very delicious partner for Steamed Saba or known locally as "linung-ag nga saging".... We have been raving about the Saba here in the islands as the taste is rather different.. And just one saba will make you full already...

My cousin told me of a foreigner friend of hers who came to the island looking for Wifi connection, as well as hd tv antennas in the year 1997.. When he ate the saba and uyap by the sea shore, he forgot about his wishes and went on further and explored the island and all it can offer...  Of course, nowadays, there is Wifi everywhere and even cable television... So apart from exploring the island, there is no reason to get bored at all.. If nothing else will work, there is always the yummy foodies...

Paco (wild fern)

When you live in the island where fresh produce abound, I am sure everything is healthy.. And if food eaten is fresh, then it will help make a healthy body..
Above is a variety of fern, locally known as "Paco" that grows only in the mountainous parts of the island as well as in the cool forests... As we all know, Camiguin still boosts of forests and in these forests, lots of wild plants grow, and are eaten by the locals..  They can be found at the market place and sells rather cheaply.. Imagine, a bundle of Paco will cost only P 5.00 and to cook it is rather simple..

All you have to do is saute onions, garlic, meat (pork, beef, chicken or even tuna) and add the Paco heads... add soy sauce, simmer, and taste..Yummy and healthy.. I wonder if one will still be busy reading m5 extreme reviews after knowing the nutritional value of Paco...

My sister sweet loves this so much, she is craving for this every time she thinks of Camiguin..

Foodies from Carcar, Cebu..

>> Friday, April 15, 2011

The first time I tasted foodies from Carcar, Cebu was when we were on our way (and back) to Moalboal, during the community building activity that we had, back when I was working at a contact center in Mandaue City...
I loved the taste of the Bukarilyo (Bucarillo).. Young coconut made into sweet candy.. and with the food coloring used, they are rather very attractive..
Of course, there is also Ampao, rice crispies that is also sweetened and encrusted together. There are also two kinds of Pork Chicharon. One is with the meat, and the other, purely pork fat that is deep fried... All these foodies I mentioned are all yummy. So aside from being the shoe capital of Cebu province, Carcar is also known for these goodies.. A friend of mine told me that the best testosterone supplements can also be found in Carcar.. As to what it is called, I forgot. That was a long time ago, when that information was relayed to me..

As it runs..

Three of my cousins are now enrolled in Enderun.. I wonder if one of them or all three of them will own their very own restaurant in the future.. Perhaps a single proprietorship or a corporation.. I wonder what concept they will apply, if they will use peacock alley or any other linens.. I wonder what food they shall serve..hmm...

Anyway, if they do happen to put up a food business, I am sure they wont have a difficult time building the business as they all come from an enterprising family..  With regards to supply of beef, pork and chicken, they won't have a problem, as they already own a franchise of Monterey... so--- I am sure it will be hit...

Cafe 1914, Camiguin Islands

My cousin had been telling us about this cafe that serves the best Halo halo in Camiguin. We brushed off the idea because it had been raining since we got here.  But yesterday, it was so warm and humid.
So at three in the afternoon, we decided to go there. But we were caught with a few other matters. Plus we waited for my cousin to finish office tasks.. So at five in the afternoon, our quest for the island's best Halo-halo resumed...

Yesterday we went for Halohalo and Siopao at Cafe 1914. It is said to be the best source of Halohalo in Camiguin Islands. So instead of thinking about my tasks and looking for the best data backup software, or finding all sorts of information I was trying to search for, I ate Halohalo and Siopao at Cafe 1914..

I was told by the attendant that their ice cream is home made. They order it from someone from the island.. It does not taste good alone, but the ice cream with the Halo-halo mixture tastes wonderful.. Not too sweet-- just the right blend..
A serving of Halo-halo costs P 60.00 only.. It has lots of fruits and the milk they use is Alaska... Then their Siopao was introduced too..
I love how the meat and the dough tastes.. One Siopao will cost you P 23.00 only...

Food Served in Pangyawan

>> Wednesday, April 13, 2011

We went to Pangyawan as per invitation of my cousin's half brother and his family, who were generous and  hospitable towards us.. When we arrived, we were welcomed by freshly harvested Buko from the coconut trees in their own yard...

They also cooked Kamoteng Kahoy and we enjoyed how naturally sweet they were..

After that afternoon snack, we went to the seashore and decided to take a plunge and go boating...

My cousin told me that at that very shore, fishermen would sell fresh fishes direct from when they have arrived from fishing at the deep waters... They are fishes you would normally find in the market, that shall already be priced high and perhaps be preserved using ice..  But buying from there would mean that the fishes are yet fresh, un-iced and cheap..If the fisherman is a friend, you can even get them for free...

My cousin told us that in the morning she will buy some fresh catch for us to enjoy... so yeah, in the morning, we were served Tinolang Nucos (Squid) and Bisayang Manok sa Gata (Native Chicken in Coconut Milk) for breakfast... Yummy.. Both, chicken and squid were fresh...
I bet this is your first time to hear of Tinolang Nucos or Stewed Squid as it is usually cooked Adobo style. Tinolang Squid is much similar to cooking Fish Tinola as fresh squid is cooked in boiling water with lemon grass as primary herbal ingredient... It tasted sweet, and has no odor..
Before we started breakfast, I saw two other foodies coking in the kitchen with another Squid recipe, and the Native Chicken in coconut milk continuously boiling...
They used "Dahon sa Sili" and Malunggay as added ingredients...
Boy, it was sumptuous and delicious, no matter how simply they were prepared....

Top 6 New Technologies Revolutionizing Education

>> Tuesday, April 12, 2011

The tools that are available to those within education today are amazing. There is so much wonderful technology that it has changed the face of education as we know it.

1. iPhone Apps: Who would have thought that you could get so much out of your phone? With the evolution of the iPhone and other Smartphones just like it came the apps that teachers can’t live without. Whether they are using the apps to help with something in the class or looking for new ideas, these are great. It’s so easy for a teacher to just pull up something on their phone and the ideas can start flowing. This is wonderful for teachers who may need a little help in getting organized or who may need some fresh ideas in how to reach their children. Whatever the reason they are used, these apps represent one of the best forms of technology to hit the face of education.

2. Online Lesson Plans: Though teachers still have to come up with their own lesson plans, sometimes they just need some fresh ideas. Not only are the online lesson plans well founded but they can help to get a teacher on track with a fresh start. There are so many different types and forms of lesson plans out there and it’s easy enough to pick the one that best suits your needs. You can even track all of your lesson plans online, which makes it really easy if you ever need a substitute in the classroom.

3. Educational Websites: Teachers can use the websites to teach certain lessons. They can point students in the direction of the right educational websites to help educate their students and provide research material. Students can take the websites to help create new ways of learning things outside of the classroom. These sites can test knowledge and really help to reinforce what is being taught in the classroom on a daily basis. This is great for everyone and provides a different and rather fun way of learning.

4. Online Courses: Teachers can take advantage of the many educational online courses to further their knowledge on a certain area. They may use the online courses to keep up with their continuous education credits or even to obtain another degree. Students can gain an education that they may never have been able to get and all from the comfort of their own home. Nothing has changed the face of education more than online courses and the way that they have made education so accessible.

5. Test Preparation Software: There are so many standardized and required tests these days that it’s hard to know which end is up. The wonderful test preparation software that is out there today can really help to prepare a student for whichever test they are taking. They can not only utilize these to study from but also to test their knowledge and take practice exams before the big day arrives.

6. Educational Forums: Sometimes teachers just need to talk to others just like them in the field. With the many wonderful educational forums that are out there, teachers can be united with others from all over the world. This helps to answer questions and ensure that a teacher is always prepared no matter what.

Teachers need certain tools, and there are many available to them today. These forms of technology are the best out there and with great reasons for their contribution.

Food Along the Way...

>> Monday, April 11, 2011

We had an amazing week.. We went to Cebu to visit the Virgin Mary of Simala in Lindugon, Sibonga, Cebu Province.. Actually, we came here in Camiguin first then took the longer route of going to Cebu via Jagna and Tagbilaran Bohol, then took the bus going Oslob, got down at Lindugon and took another ride going up Simala.. It was a very long journey.. But for my sister, it means, no wearing of her nursing uniform, as she has a week to enjoy before their review for NLE.. But of course, they wouldn't be wearing nursing uniforms during their review.. Not even scrub tops or pants.. hehehe.. But the will be housed so the week was a breather for her so busy and tiresome schedule...

Anyway, the trip was also like a journey of food, as we had to eat along the way..

The first foodie was the Empanadas and Fresh Lumpia from Balbagon Port, in Camiguin, when we were about to leave...

They were sold by a vendor who was authorized to enter the lounge... They were warm and yummy.. I loved the creamy sauce of the Fresh Lumpia and the crunch in every bite of the Empanadas...

When we arrived in Jagna, we had lunch at this foodstore just outside the port, and they served really great food. Too bad I was not able to take a photo of the foodies we ate there.. I remembered taking a photo of the Peanut Kisses we bought from them when we were already at the pension house in Cebu.. No Calamay as they will add to our burden already...

When we were settled at the pension house, we decided to have dinner at Da Vinci's.. I so missed their pizza...

That's the Da Vinci's Masterpiece in white sauce...
Yummy Pizza and Chicken...
Glad my siblings and daughter enjoyed the treat.. The next day, we went straight to Santo Nino Shrine and had old women, and men, pray the "sinulog" on the four of us.. After that, we went and had breakfast, passing by these vendors and their goodies..
But we didn't buy any as I knew we shall meet the same foodies on the road.. on our way to Simala...
These are the Ampao and Bukarilyo which were sold by a bus stop vendor when we stopped at Carcar, Cebu. These vendors would flag a bus, and sell their goodies on board.. Then, they will go down at the next stop..
These are sold according to what kind of bus they are on. For example, I bought two packs of Bukarilyo when we were on board the air conditioned bus and I paid P 40, while the same packs, I only got at P 30 on the non-air conditioned bus, on our way back...

And finally, we went to Metro Gaisano to buy our pasalubong goodies..
If only we had more time to spend in Cebu, we could have explored further, and we could have visited all my favorite foodie places.. Can't believe I missed Casa Verde and Alfredo's Pizza on this trip... anyway, there's always a next time..
